Two of Coins

A couple of personal "dualities" in the imagery:

  • I'm from the U.S. and live in Europe. The photographer and I met in Italy, and the photo was taken in Tennesee.
  • I'm an unemployed mother and rarely leave the house. Sacagewea was a "working" mother and rarely went in a house.
  • Famous men and little-known women: Lewis and Clark/Sacagewea, Waite/Smith, O'Neill/Moonchild
  • There is also a political statement in this image, comparing the two represented empires.

ALTERNATE NAMES: Change, Multi-tasking

RW DESCRIPTION: A young man balancing on one foot or dancing hold a pentacle in each hand, and he's looking at the lower one in his left hand. Around the two pents is a green ribbon leminiscate. Behind him is the sea, with two ships riding large waves. He's not standing on the sea shore, rather on a dock or boardwalk or some such.
FIRST THING THAT STRUCK ME: His tall, dorky red hat.
SYMBOLISM: Juggling symbolizes efficiency and organization. Leminiscate is for eternity, or maybe just to show fluctuating motion. One raised foot equals dancing, being "light on one's feet," skipping along, etc. Ships ride the ups and downs.

UPRIGHT MEANINGS: Juggling or alternating tasks, having one's hands full, handling ups and downs, stepping up to challenges, coping with demands, rocking and rolling "in the weeds" (restaurant lingo). Agility, flexibility, adaptability, trying new approaches, changing direction, harmony during change, setting priorities, bringing resources together. Balancing finances, change of employment, the stock market, exchange rate, exchange of merchandise, barter. Give and take. Rise and fall.

REVERSED MEANINGS: Unable to cope with demands, temporary setbacks, minor failures (i.e. losing games), tenseness, stubborness, rigidity, clumsiness. Unbalanced accounts, loss of income, anxiety about money and position, unfair trade. Giving without receiving in kind.

BIBLICAL: "Whatever you are doing, work at it whole-souled as to Jehovah, and not to men, for you know that it is from Jehovah you will receive the due reward of the inheritance. Slave for the Master, Christ."--Colossians 3:23-24
MYTHOLOGICAL: ?
HISTORICAL: Card makers have traditionally used the Two of Pents (Coins) as their signature card, or imprint.

ANIMAL/INSECT: busy bee
PLANTS/FLOWERS/TREES: Deciduous trees. Flowers that open and close morning and evening.
LANDSCAPE/LOCATION:
dock of the bay
TIME/SEASON: indeterminate (although there are shades of celestial events)

FILM/BOOK: The penguin waiter from Mary Poppins. Joan Bunning says "First Knight."
MUSIC: David Bowie's "Changes"
PUBLIC PEOPLE OR EVENTS: Lenzburg "Gauklerfest"--a weekend of street performances.
OCCUPATIONS:
juggler, street performer, waitperson
QUOTES FROM OTHER SOURCES:
With the right shoes, you can go anywhere.--?
Enjoyment is not a goal, it is a feeling that accompanies important ongoing activity.--Paul Goodman
A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything that you have.--Gerald Ford

SITUATIONS IN MY LIFE: Waiting tables on a Saturday night.
PERSONAL THOUGHTS:
The main symbol, for me, is Sacagewea. I can't imagine the many alternating tasks she undertook, and how many times she must have had to change her priorities. Now feed the baby, now lead the men, now swim for shore, now make peace, now nurse the sick .... Any mother's life is not so different. Most must do laundry, clean house, cook, teach, police and nurse--all at the same time.
The Two of Coins can be a card of decision, though not the "either/or" kind. It's about setting one thing over another, without totally excluding the other. Even though it seems one can do two (or more) things at one time, there is still a primary and secondary task. One thing has the "upper hand." In our decisions, our tasks, our priorities, even our spending--one choice takes precedence over others. A tossed coin must land on heads or tails, but the other side remains, waiting for the next toss--or sale, or piggy bank, or fountain.
THIS CARD/PERSON IN MY LIFE: Reminds me of Rennies (Renaissance Festival workers) for a couple of reasons: 1) their performance talents; 2) they alternate between modern and medieval; 3) they barter.

FAVORITE REPRESENTATION: Halloween Tarot
COMPARISONS TO OTHER DECKS:
Some decks show the Pents horizontal (RW-style), while others show them vertical (TdM-style).
COMPARISONS TO OTHER CARDS:
A very watery Pent card! The other cards in the RW which have leminiscates are Magician and Strength. I can see the connection to both of those cards, but especially the Magician, as they have a lot of common ground as bateleur, jongleur, gaukler.
