VII-The Chariot

O Lord my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain: Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind.--Psalms 104:1-3

ALTERNATE NAMES: Orbiter 3, Le Chariot, El Carro, Victory, the Sled, Oedipus

WHY ORBITER 3: starry canopy, cubic carriage, armor ("space suits"), no reins (sphinxes were the four winds); journey, vehicle, leaving the "nest" (earth, ancestors, family), "hereditary royalty" (!), assimilating knowledge learned from elders and using it to succeed, self-reliance, determined pursuit led to acheivement of goal, identities/names established, mastery proven. Also balance of opposing forces, as two men from different cultures had to share a cubicle for three weeks--and they had to "pull together" in order to get anywhere.

FIRST THING THAT STRUCK ME (RW): He's cute, but why does he have fins? Looks more like a voting booth than a chariot.
TIME: a man's lifetime, milestone by milestone

TRADITIONAL MEANINGS UPRIGHT: Succour, providence; also war, triumph, presumption, vengeance, trouble. (Waite) Victory, will, self-assertion, "hard" control. (Bunning) ALSO: Pursuing or reaching a goal, determination to succeed, sustained effort, clear purpose, pursuit, conquest. Self-control/discipline, self-confidence, self-reliance. Establishing an identity, proving yourself, showing mastery over what you've learned. Getting your own way, showing authority. Progress through balancing opposing forces. Carrying on. A survivor.

ADDITIONAL MEANINGS: Travel, journey (inner or outer), vehicles or transportation (possibly even "armchair tourist.") Majestic architecture (pyramids, cathedrals, temples . . . ), or visiting such landmarks, when combined with other cards indicating travel. Relocating, esp. a young person moving away from home. Job search. Voting. Leaving bad habits or addictions behind.

TRADITIONAL MEANINGS REVERSED: Riot, quarrel, dispute, litigation, defeat. (Waite) ALSO: Out of control, someone else running your life, impatience, reluctance to act, avoidance. Feeling defeated, overturned, failure, lack of progress. Uncontrolled desire or ambition, driving too hard. Lack of purpose, motivation or direction, being pulled in two directions. QUOTES FROM OTHER SOURCES: Bhagavad-Gita: "The Self is the rider in the Chariot of the body, of which the senses are the horses and the mind the reins."

OTHER DECKS: feature lions, horses, cherubim or dogs (Sled) pulling the Chariot.

SOME SYMBOLS: A Chariot is a vehicle, which can also be the body. The wheels are large, which indicate the ability to move great distances, seeing great change. Four wands hold up the canopy, representing the foundations of the earth, including the directions we move in -- east, south, west, north. Laurel wreath signifies success. Moons represent the receptive and projective aspects of his nature. Armor, which connects him to the crab of Cancer, for protection, whether physical or psychological. Belt and "apron," similar to those used by freemasons, have symbols on them as signs of protection.
